Literary Genres (13): Realistic Fiction

Image
REALISTIC FICTION is a genre consisting of stories that could have actually occurred to people or animals in a believable setting. These stories resemble real life, and fictional characters within these stories react similarly to real people. Stories that are classified as realistic fiction have plots that highlight social or personal events or issues that mirror contemporary life, such as falling in love, marriage, finding a job, divorce, alcoholism, etc. It is understandable that fiction can encompass multiple genres, meaning that it can have two or more genres that overlap with each other in one story. A work of realistic fiction, for example, can also hold elements of adventure or romance, so long as the piece of work still stays within the parameters of the genre’s definition. As such, it can be said that different types of realistic fiction include not only adventure and romance, but also humorous stories, mysteries and sports stories. Of course, the different types are not lim

Create Narrative Flow

Transition words are useful for all types of writers. Whether you’re attempting academic writing, blogging, speech writing, or writing fiction, transition words can help refine your text and create a narrative flow. What Are Transition Words? Transition words are any words that link parts of text together and create cohesion. Depending on the logical reasoning of your sentences, transition words can denote time, agreement, or opposition. A transition word can be a coordinating conjunction (“and,” “but,” “for,” etc.), a subordinating conjunction (“although,” “because,” etc.) or a conjunctive adverb (“however,” “therefore,” “moreover,” etc.). The transition words you use depend on the context of your writing. What Is the Purpose of Transition Words? Transition words are linking words that bring coherence to and between the sentences of your text, creating a natural flow of thought. Learning to use different transitions effectively will help you write more cohesive pieces and improve yo

Myths, Folklore, Legends, and Fairy Tales

Image
The terms myth, folklore, legend, and fairy tale are often used interchangeably, leading to the misconception that they mean the same thing: fanciful tales. Although it’s true that these terms may refer to bodies of writing that answer some of life’s basic questions or present commentary on morality, each type presents a distinct reader experience. They’ve all stood the test of time, which speaks volumes about their ongoing hold on our imaginations. Myth A myth is a traditional story that may answer life’s overarching questions, such as the origins of the world (the creation myth) or of a people. A myth can also be an attempt to explain mysteries, supernatural events, and cultural traditions. Sometimes sacred in nature, a myth can involve gods or other creatures. It presents reality in dramatic ways. Many cultures have their own versions of common myths that contain archetypal images and themes. One common myth that spans multiple cultures is that of a great flood. Myth criticism is

Writer Should Know

Image
You’ve probably heard the saying “good writing is rewriting.” It means good writing requires coming up with ideas, reviewing and organizing them, putting them into a cohesive written work, revisiting your work, editing it, and revising it to make your words stronger. These steps are known as the writing process. No matter what you’re writing, whether it’s a blog post, a screenplay, a research paper, or a book review, you’ll work through the writing process to turn your rough ideas into a polished, publishable finished piece. Read on to learn more about the writing process’ six steps in detail. Brainstorming The writing process actually starts before you put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard. The first step is brainstorming. Depending on the assignment, you may be given a topic or you may have to create one yourself. Do an internet search for the topic you’ll be covering to get a stronger grasp on it and all the potential directions your writing can take. When you brainstorm, you th

Annoying Things People Do

Image
We’re big fans of human beings in general, but oh my Lord, sometimes they’re so annoying, we wish we could mind-control them into being better. Humanity needs an upgrade, a software patch: the first thing that should be phased out are those pesky little behaviors that irritate us. That frustrate us. That make us rant and rave on the internet and to our words. #1 People Who Constantly Block The Isles Of Stores To Stand Around And Chat #2 People Who Do This Are Just The Worst #3 People That Park Like This #4 When People Drape Their Hair Over The Backs Of Chairs #5 People Who Do This With Their Shopping Carts #6 People Hoping To Skip Queues By Standing Like This And Trying To Slip In #7 I Had To Get Into My Car From The Passenger Seat Because This Person Doesn’t Know What The White Lines Are For #8 My Friend’s Desktop Deserves To Be In Here
